Order types

What this is for

Every order has a type, and it's the first thing chosen when an order starts. The type isn't a label — it changes what Restodesk asks for, what it charges, and how the order behaves for the rest of its life.

Restodesk ships with three:

TypeForWhat it changes
Dine InEating inAsks for a table and a guest count. Follows the served-at-table route.
DeliveryTaking it to themAsks for an address, adds a delivery fee, can be assigned to a driver.
PickupThey collectAsks for a pickup date and time. Follows the ready-for-collection route.

You can add your own on top of these — see Custom order types.

Dine In

The default for a restaurant with a room.

Choosing it makes the POS ask for:

  • Table — which one, from your floor plan.
  • Pax — how many people. If you enter more than the table's seating capacity, Restodesk warns you and sets it back to capacity.
  • Waiter — who took the order, if you're tracking that.

Dine-in orders hold the table until they're Completed, which is why a table stays Running after payment.

Delivery

Choosing it makes the POS ask for the customer's address, and adds your delivery fee.

Delivery orders can be assigned to a delivery executive, who moves them through picked up, out for delivery, arrived and delivered from their own app.

Only executives who are online are offered for assignment — that's why a name you expect might be missing.

Pickup

The customer orders now and collects later.

Choosing it makes the POS ask for a Pickup Date & Time, which must be in the future. That time is what the kitchen works back from, and what shows on the customer's confirmation.

Pickup orders don't hold a table and don't need an address.

Choosing the type

On the POS, the order type is asked for first — Select Order Type, before you add anything.

You can change it afterwards, but Restodesk warns you first: changing the order type may remove selected items. That's because prices and charges can differ per type. Change the type before building the bill, not after.

Skipping the question

If you're a single-purpose operation — a delivery-only kitchen, a dine-in-only bistro — being asked every time is friction.

Under Settings › Orders, turn on Disable Order Type Popup and pick a Default Order Type. The POS then starts every order as that type without asking. Staff can still change it on the order.

Which types customers can choose

Each order type has Enable From Customer Site, which decides whether guests see it when ordering online.

Turn off the ones you don't want the public choosing. A restaurant that delivers only within its own postcode and arranges that by phone might offer dine-in and pickup online, and keep delivery staff-entered.

Prices can differ by order type

An item can carry a different price depending on how it's ordered — a delivery price that covers packaging, for example, or a lower dine-in price.

This is set on the menu item, not here. What matters on this page: changing an order type recalculates the bill, which is exactly why Restodesk asks before letting you do it mid-order.

Good to know

  • The three built-in types can't be deleted or renamed. They can be deactivated if you don't use one.
  • Order types are per branch, so a delivery-only dark kitchen and a dine-in restaurant under the same company configure separately.
  • Room Service appears as a type only when the hotel add-on is switched on. See Room service.
  • Charges can be attached to specific order types — a service charge on dine-in but not on takeaway. See Discounts, taxes and charges.
